Guitarist Joe Williamson has been announced as the 2018 Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year after a stand out performance at the live final in Glasgow on June 20th.
Five musicians made it through to the final at Drygate in Glasgow; Joe Williamson, Fergus McCreadie, Conor Murray, Luca Manning and Matt Carmichael. Each finalist played two pieces of their own choice showcasing their talents as improvisers and band leaders, supported by the house band of Mario Caribé (bass), Alyn Cosker (drums) and Pete Johnstone (piano).
Chair of the judging panel and Jazz From Scotland Chair Kim Macari says:
“The striking thing about this year’s final was that we heard five strong and unique artistic voices shining through. The panel were aware that they were being given a preview of all that’s in store for Scotland’s jazz scene in the years to come and left feeling very reassured that it’s in safe hands. Joe Williamson left the panel wishing they could listen to an entire gig of his music and were delighted to award him the title of Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2018.”
Joe will receive performance opportunities at The Blue Lamp in Aberdeen, Glasgow Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival 2019, a set of professional photographs, and mentoring and continual professional development by Jazz from Scotland.
