The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) directed by Tommy Smith is everything a modern big band should be; bold, versatile, disciplined, inventive and expressive.
Many great jazz musicians have joined with the SNJO to vividly re-imagine iconic works, break new ground and re-visit timeless jazz classics. In the course of its twenty-year history the SNJO’s special guests have included Gary Burton, Kenny Wheeler, Peter Erskine, Joe Lovano, Arild Andersen, Branford Marsalis, Kurt Elling, Courtney Pine and Makoto Ozone.
These collaborations have celebrated jazz pioneers like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, alongside the concomitant commission of new work. The SNJO has also shown that jazz can be eclectic and electric in its treatment of music by Weather Report, Yellowjackets and Steely Dan.
The SNJO discography includes Miles Ahead, Torah, Rhapsody in Blue, Celebration, In the Spirit of Duke, American Adventure, Bobby Wellins’ Culloden Moor Suite and Jeunehomme with Makoto Ozone.
